JOB SUMMARY:
The Wisconsin State Laboratory of Hygiene (WSLH) is the state's public and environmental health laboratory. As part of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, the WSLH is committed to exploring new ideas which benefit the state, the nation and the world. The newborn screening laboratory has an exciting fast-paced full time public health opportunity for a Chemist.

This position performs screening tests and assay development and validation to identify congenital disorders/conditions in newborns as part of Wisconsin's Newborn Screening Program. The techniques relevant to this position include, but are not limited to, molecular technologies, such as polymerase chain reaction (PCR), real-time PCR, agarose-gel electrophoresis, Sanger sequencing, digital PCR, and/or Next Generation Sequencing (NGS). Secondary techniques include tandem mass spectrometry, enzymatic assays, and/or immunoreaction assays. In conjunction with other professionals in the program, this position also engages in reporting of screening test results. This position also provides technical assistance in research and projects. The research duties may include conducting experiments, data organization and analysis, participating in preparation for scientific presentations and manuscripts. The person in this position is expected to model and use the tools and priniples of quality management in their daily work including: demonstrate exceptional professionalism by establishing and maintaining effective professional relationships with directors, managers, supervisors, and coworkers and all customers. The person must use effective team skills to contribute to the efficient operation of the work unit and the organization. Participation in continuous learning through professional development activities is also expected.

EDUCATION:
Required
Bachelor's Degree
Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biology, Genetics, or other related field. Ability to meet CLIA Laboratory Testing Personnel Standards for high complexity testing required.

QUALIFICATIONS:
A color vision screening will be conducted prior to an offer of employment.

Chemist I: clinical chemistry/biochemistry/molecular or medical technology laboratory training or working experience is preferred.

Chemist II: at least 3 years of working experience in chemistry/biochemistry/molecular or medical technology laboratory, with a clinical testing or regulatory compliance setting, is required.

WORK TYPE:
Full Time: 100%

It is anticipated this position requires work be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location.

APPOINTMENT TYPE, DURATION:
Ongoing/Renewable

SALARY:
Minimum $45,000 ANNUAL (12 months)
Depending on Qualifications
Minimum salary for Chemist I: $45,000/year
Minimum salary for Chemist II: $52,000/year

Actual pay will depend on experience and qualifications. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
Preferred hours are 8:00 am to 4:30 pm Monday through Friday; holiday and weekend work, on a rotating basis, may also be required.
