Job Description

The Edith Kinney Gaylord Expository Writing Program at the University of Oklahoma is hiring a Lecturer to begin teaching in Fall 2023. Expository Writing [ou.edu/expo] is housed in an academic unit with the OU Writing Center [ou.edu/writingcenter]. Expository Writing lecturers teach thematic, interdisciplinary writing seminars to first-year students and retain the autonomy to determine topics, readings, and writing assignments working at the intersection of their research interests and the Program’s pedagogy. The teaching load is 2/2, with enrollment capped at 16 students per section. The position entails a five-year renewable term. Lecturers receive a competitive salary, full benefits, and a generous travel and research stipend; they are eligible for promotion to Senior Lecturer after five years of service.

The multidisciplinary makeup of our faculty is an important consideration in this search: candidates from all academic disciplines are encouraged to apply. Past and current Expository Writing lecturers include anthropologists, creative writers, compositionists, geographers, historians, folklorists and literary scholars. We welcome applicants with degrees in Writing Studies, Ethnic Studies, Queer Studies, Disability Studies or focused in a variety of STEM fields. We seek teachers whose commitment to inclusive excellence leads them to an expansive set of pedagogical approaches, from digital media in the classroom to community-engaged curricula. Experience teaching undergraduate writing is required but need not be in the context of a first-year writing course. By time of appointment, lecturers must hold a terminal degree (PhD or MFA).

Founded in 1890, the University of Oklahoma is a public research university located in Norman, Oklahoma, just 20 miles south of Oklahoma City. OU’s Norman undergraduate population is almost 22,000; the entire student body numbers more than 30,000 across three campuses. Interested candidates can visit [ou.edu/facultyrecruitment] for more information about the University.

Required Education: PhD or terminal degree in English, Rhetoric, and Composition or related field.
