Job Description

Why Patients Need You

Pfizer’s purpose is to deliver breakthroughs that change patients’ lives. Research and Development is at the heart of fulfilling Pfizer’s purpose as we work to translate advanced science and technologies into the therapies and vaccines that matter most. Whether you are in the discovery sciences, ensuring drug safety and efficacy or supporting clinical trials, you will apply cutting edge design and process development capabilities to accelerate and bring the best in class medicines to patients around the world.

What You Will Achieve

Pfizer is using human genetics to inform the discovery and validation of new drug targets and the mechanistic understanding of disease pathology. A necessary component of genetic studies applied to drug discovery is testing of the functional consequences of disease-associated genes and variants. Pfizer’s Functional Genomics group, with labs in both Cambridge and New York City, is launching the Functional Genomics Technology Center at our Cambridge site. Working closely with disease biologists across therapeutic areas, the Functional Genomics Tech Center applies the latest experimental gene editing tools and novel screening approaches to bring the best new targets into the portfolio and deepen our knowledge of targets under development.

We are seeking an experienced molecular biologist, with expertise in gene editing and functional genomics screening, to contribute to the success of the new Functional Genomics Tech Center in Cambridge. This is an exciting opportunity to apply cutting-edge methods and contribute to the target portfolio of one of the world’s leading developers of novel therapeutics.

How You Will Achieve It

  • Apply a versatile repertoire of gene editing and molecular biological tools to rapidly test the functional consequences of genes and variants in appropriate cell-based model systems
  • Design and conduct functional genomics screens in pooled and arrayed formats
  • Support screening and technology development projects related to key emerging science areas, and develop and internalize new and innovative screening strategies
  • Analyze screens and work with genetics, computational, and other colleagues to identify and champion new targets
  • Work with external providers, when appropriate, to expand capabilities in the functional genomics space
  • Stay current with gene editing and related technologies in order to evaluate new approaches and incorporate improvements
  • Work closely with other Functional Genomics lab personnel in Cambridge and New York City.
  • Collaborate closely and maintain productive relationships with disease area biologists and other Tech Center colleagues (NGS, FACS, Imaging, and Mass Spec).
  • Serve as a technical resource for gene editing and other gene modulation technologies

Qualifications

Must-Have

  • PhD degree in molecular biology or related field with at least three years of postdoctoral experience
  • Track record of successful contribution to research projects, leading to project advancement and/or peer-reviewed publications, preferably utilizing gene editing methodologies
  • Hands-on experience with gene editing and high-throughput functional genomics screening
  • Expertise in molecular and cell biology, including experience with tissue culture
  • Previous experience in disease-focused research, particularly in immune/inflammatory diseases, metabolic diseases, or cancer
  • Experience developing and analyzing cell-based assays
  • Experience with NGS-based readouts from pooled functional genomics screens
  • Ability to work independently and balance multiple projects simultaneously
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to effectively collaborate with other scientists

Nice-to-Have

  • Experience evaluating and implementing new techniques, particularly in the field of gene editing
  • Familiarity with computational approaches to target discovery is a plus
