The Senior Adult Oncology Program at Moffitt Cancer Center is aimed at preventing and treating cancer in people 70 years of age or older, as well as improving their quality of life. A cornerstone of the program is a comprehensive geriatric assessment that helps team members to identify problem areas related to cancer, as well as other issues that are directly related to aging – such as missed diagnoses and day-to-day functional abilities.

The program strives to:

• Design personalized medical and therapeutic treatment plans for each senior

• Recognize “unsuspected” diagnoses

• Maximize social support

• Prevent dangerous drug interactions

• Optimize the nutrition of the older person with cancer

• Meet the rehabilitative needs of the patient

• Address socioeconomic issues and family/caregiver concerns that can affect the patient’s health care.

The Senior Adult Oncology Program takes into account other conditions that may affect older people, including accompanying diseases, limitations on activity, transportation problems, volume of medications, nutritional problems and memory disorders or depression.

A holistic approach is used to assess functional limitations and nutritional and psychosocial status. Use of prescription and non-prescription medications is reviewed, and possible harmful interactions and side effects are identified. This includes counseling on the use of alternative medications, such as herbs, vitamins, etc.

Our Senior Adult Clinic cares for 30-40 patients on a daily basis.  We are currently looking for a Certified Medical Assistant to join our team. 

 

Position Highlights:

  • Certified Medical Assistants are essential members of the clinic team. They contribute to the healthcare of patients by assisting with exams and procedures, organizing and managing patient flow, performing administrative functions and taking on other responsibilities based on the needs of the department.
  • This position is builds relationships and rapport with patients. 
  • The Certified Medical Assistant at Senior Adult Clinic will float to the GU Clinic to assist as needed.   

The Ideal Candidate

  • The ideal candidate will have the following:
    • Prior experience in an outpatient clinic setting as a Medical Assistant.
    • Prior experience with front office functions

 

Responsibilities:

  • Assists patients with ambulation and/or movement on/off exam table, chairs and/or in and out of wheelchairs utilizing proper body mechanics and safety measures such as, lift equipment.
  • After proper patient identification, performs initial patient screening, including vital signs, screening questions, allergy information, and medication history as appropriate. Notifies appropriate staff of positive screening or abnormal vital signs. Documents collected data completely and accurately in medical record including staff notifications. Loads images in preparation for provider visit, as needed. Ensures clinic patient flow is smooth and efficient. Keeps patients and clinical team informed of delays. Communicates effectively to patients, providers, nurses, and other team members.
  • Assists practitioner in patient procedures/treatments/examinations, including room preparation, patient positioning, supplies, and equipment. Departs from clinic those patients that do not require nursing intervention. Maintains and uses principles of aseptic techniques and universal precautions when performing clinical duties and tasks.
  • Maintains the knowledge and skill necessary to provide care or services based on physical, psychosocial, educational, safety, and related criteria appropriate to the age of the patients served in the assigned service area. Utilizes computerized systems according to departmental needs.
  • Provides support to the provider during clinic by assisting with phone calls and faxes.
  • Recognizes emergency situations and implements emergency procedures. Administers first aid and CPR.

 

Credentials and Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Certification or Registration from one of the following organizations:
    • American Association of Medical Assistants (AMAA)
    • American Medical Technologists (AMT)
    • National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT)
    • National Healthcareer Association (NHA)
    • National Association for Health Professionals (NAHP)
  • BLS Certification
  • Experience performing lab draws and EKG testing.
  • Successful completion of a medical Assistant training program; or Applicable Military Medical Training; or Students who are actively enrolled in a BSN program, have completed nursing fundamentals and can provide proof of enrollment at the beginning of every semester.
