Job Description
Under the direct supervision of the Manager, Radiology, the Technologist Ultrasound is responsible for performing diagnostic procedures on patients using ultrasonic waves to examine body structures and tissue.
- Performs diagnostic medical ultrasound procedures. Exercises professional judgment in performance of procedure and patient care. Documents reasons for any variation in procedure. Communicates with referring physician.
- Obtains patient history and clinical data for correlation with exams. Compiles exam for reading by radiologist.
- Critiques exam for film quality and proper identification. Scans all required documentation into the RIS system.
- Communicates with patients throughout exam. Assists patients. Explains exam to patient or responsible party.
- Complies with OSHA and hospital infection control policies.
- Responds to calls on various shifts.
- Keeps supervisor informed of equipment/safety problems.
- Identifies, transports, lifts, and positions patients for exams.
- Performs duties of a radiologic technologist as required and qualified.
- Recognizes patient levels of psychosocial development and modifies approaches accordingly.
- Assesses patients for signs/symptoms of abuse or neglect and reports findings to radiologist or staff physician.
- Follows safe radiation practices in selection of radiographic techniques and protective shielding, to self and patient in radiographic areas.
- Performs receptionist functions and clerical duties.
- Controls inventory and purchase of supplies as assigned.
- Maintains cleanliness of room; stocks supplies.
- Performs quality assurance duties as assigned.
- Completes mandatory education and training in order to maintain organization and department specific competencies and requirements. Maintains applicable certification/licensure. Required to complete RDMS and RVT registration within one year of appointment to position. Maintains CPR (BLS).
- Follows hospital/system and department policies and procedures with special attention to attendance and punctuality, confidentiality, dress code and display of ID badge, and safety.

Education:
- Graduate of formal program of study accredited by the Committee on Allied Health Education and accreditation of the AMA, or completion of didactic and clinical experience or graduate of an ARDMS approved school of ultrasound technology.
Certifications:
- RDMS or registry eligible (Successfully completed RDMS and RVT registration within one year of appointment to position). Maintains CPR (BLS).
Complexity of Work:
- Maintains competencies specific to patient population served.
Work Experience:
- One-year experience as an ultrasound technologist preferred.
