Are you an early career scientist/technician with exceptional laboratory skills and an interest in solar & renewable energy? We have an exciting, ongoing opportunity for a Renewable Energy Laboratory Scientist to join our CSIRO Solar Technologies Group!

 

Our Solar Technologies team in Newcastle works on new technologies for power generation and energy storage. We are leading the way in next-generation solar cells, and concentrated solar thermal (CST) research, specialising in high-temperature central receiver systems. We’re developing this technology for a global market.

 

As part of this team, within CSIRO’s Energy Business Unit, you will work within a multidisciplinary engineering & scientific team, and play a key role in supporting the inventory management, experiments, running equipment and managing logistics. Some of your active projects will include development of next generation solar cells, hydrogen production using renewable energy industrial scale solar thermal to produce decarbonised electricity.

This role is offered on a full-time or part-time basis (minimum 0.8 FTE).

Your duties will include:

  • Designing and performing straightforward experiments and routine laboratory analyses on thin films for solar applications, designing new processes or apparatus by adapting existing techniques and components to meet special circumstances or undertaking modifications to methods requiring some innovation.
  • Conducting literature reviews, investigations and inspections in the laboratory including associated analysis possibly involving statistical, graphical or software environments such as Python 3+.
  • Developing, testing and modifying nano structure materials for photovoltaic applications.
  • Performing some non-routine technology development activities using a range of techniques, often working on a number of parallel and competing tasks.
  • Working with discretion to decide on the timing of operations within the work team’s plan and planning ahead to meet experimental and/or project demands.
  • Taking responsibility for maintaining laboratory or consumables, scheduling and instructing staff in the use of shared equipment.

 

Location: Newcastle, NSW

Salary: AU$66K – AU$84K pa + up to 15.4% superannuation

To be considered you will need:

  • Relevant bachelor’s degree or equivalent relevant work experience in Chemistry, Physics, Chemical Engineering, Renewable Energy Engineering, or similar field.
  • Demonstrated experience in fabrication of thin films using one or more techniques.
  • Exposure to various analytical techniques, i.e. Current-Voltage testing, UV Vis spectroscopy, Electrochemical techniques, Gas Chromatography and X-ray Powder Diffraction.
  • Good oral and written communication skills including the ability to communicate outcomes to stakeholders.
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively as part of a multi-disciplinary team and carry out tasks safely and successfully in support of project goals.
