As a Histotechnologist, you will be responsible for understanding routine and complex biological procedures. This role requires someone who can multitask in a fast-paced environment. A Histotechnologist is familiar with cutting, mounting, staining, and studying human tissue specimens. The whole team relies on you to successfully evaluate and record specimen information. Your primary duties will include:

- Performing maintenance measures on department's equipment and instruments.

- Evaluating and recording test results.

- Preparing samples for testing.

  • Performs routine and complex biological procedures using standard and sophisticated/ specialized instrumentation and equipment in accordance with established procedures. Performs specialized staining procedures such as immunohistochemical and molecular stains. Embeds tissue, cuts blocks, prepares slides for staining, cuts frozen tissue sections.
  • Demonstrates the knowledge and theory of applicable Laboratory Medicine in order to produce required measure of accuracy.
  • Aids in proper receipt, preparation, labeling and storage of reagents, chemicals, and stains.
  • Evaluates validity of test results using quality control standards, instrumentation function checks, and/or department policies and procedures.
  • Evaluates and records test results in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Initiates appropriate corrective action to alleviate any deficiencies of quality assurance standards of established specified limits.
  • Consistently coordinates work to achieve maximum productivity and efficiency during the assigned shift.
  • Performs and documents preventive maintenance measures on department's equipment and instruments.
  • Provides general supervision to histology students, medical technology students, and others under training and orientation.
  • Adheres to proper safety procedures.
  • Demonstrates a working knowledge and understanding of computer functions.
  • Assists in compiling various data, statistics and reports.
  • Assumes responsibility for on-going continuing education and professional development as required by certification. Completes all mandatory in-service programs.
  • Other duties as assigned


Education:

  • Associates Degree with a combination of 12 semester hours (18 quarter/hours) of biology and chemistry or Bachelors Degree with a combination of 30 semester hours (45 quarters) of biology and chemistry.


Certifications:

  • Must attain certification (ASCP) as a histologist (HT or HTL) within one year of hire.


Complexity of Work:

  • Ability to perform specialized staining procedures. Strong written and verbal communication skills.


Work Experience:

  • One year training in approved histology program.
