Responsibilities:

• Conducts thorough medical histories, conducts group and individual counseling including risk assessment and diagnostic management.
• Initiates tests required for evaluation.
• Coordinates handling of patient specimens with the appropriate laboratory.
• Collects and scrutinizes lab data and medical records to establish a record of the patient's current health status. With direct review by a physician develops a working diagnosis.
• Constructs letters to referring physician regarding patient progress and treatment plans; ensures letters are reviewed and signed by the appropriate CCF physician.
• Functions as a liaison between physician, patient and family to promote effective communication and maintain quality patient care.
• Serves as a reference source to professionals and the general public for genetic services and information.
• Attends and participates in professional meetings, directed educational opportunities and in-service programs in order to enhance genetic knowledge and learn of new or changing protocols and technologies.
• Provide classroom instruction in genetics to medical students, residents and graduate students from various disciplines.
• Participates in multi-disciplinary specialty clinics.
• Provides public and professional lectures and programs. Participates in the development of genetics education materials.
• Provides information and surveillance recommendations and answers routine questions regarding genetic conditions under the direction of a physician.
• Educate patients regarding their disease and treatments including risks, benefits and limitations of genetic testing.
• Other duties as assigned.

Education:

• Masters Degree from an accredited training program in Genetic Counseling.

Certifications:

• Board Certified Genetic Counselor (CGC) by the American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) and/or the American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics (ACMG).
• Complexity of Work:Within scope of job, requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision.
• Must be able to work in a stressful environment.

Work Experience:

• Minimum of five years post-graduate clinical experience as a genetic counselor with demonstrated experience in a genetics clinic setting and proven record of addressing complex genetic histories.
• Experience with genetic counseling billing codes and EPIC EMR system is preferred.
• Experience with counseling for non-traditional low penetrance heritable or non-germline genetic conditions is highly beneficial.

Physical Requirements:

• Manual dexterity sufficient to operate a computer and other basic office equipment.
• Ability to stand, walk, and bend for extended periods throughout the work day.
• Ability to carry medical charts and books.
• Infrequent exposure to bodily fluids is possible.

Personal Protective Equipment:

• Follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required.
