Role Description:

The Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering at Harvard University invites applications for a postdoctoral fellow position in the Molecular Robotics Initiative. The mission of the Wyss Institute is to discover the engineering principles that Nature uses to build living things, pursue the high-risk research that is fundamental to advance this effort and to harness these insights to create biologically inspired materials and devices to advance human health and improve the environment — thereby revolutionizing clinical medicine and creating a more sustainable world.

The Shih Laboratory has developed structural DNA nanostructure-based immunotherapies. Successful candidates will work with an interdisciplinary team of scientists experienced in biochemistry, DNA nanotechnology, cancer immunotherapy, cellular and molecular biology and animal tumor models to develop novel cancer vaccines targeting a broad range of cancer types. The successful candidate will participate and learn the process of an interdisciplinary project using multiple technologies. The candidate will have the opportunity to work with several projects validating the efficacy of DNA nanotechnology-based vaccines on mouse models for cancer (and potentially for infectious diseases as well). These projects have high potential for translation to the clinic.

We are seeking an enthusiastic and self-motivated candidate with cellular biology, biochemistry and/or immunology training who is willing to learn multi-disciplinary approaches for immunotherapies. In general, the individual will work closely with the team leader in charge of this project and be engaged in designing and operating experiments that utilize DNA nanotechnology, immunological cellular biology techniques as well as animal tumor models. The candidate may have a future opportunity in translation of this technology in an industry position.

Responsibilities:

Review the relevant scientific literature and design experiments
Conduct experiments to support the goals of scientific research in DNA origami vaccine development
Execute protocols to fold DNA origami and prepare vaccines; work with tumor cell, dendritic cell and T cell cultures, and cell stimulation and sampling
Execute experiments such as flow cytometry, ELISA, ELISpot, Luminex, RNA sequencing, Western blots, and immunoprecipitation;
Execute animal studies by setting up tumor models and analyze mouse samples
Maintaining accurate records, analyzing data, writing reports, and preparing presentations; participate in team meetings for experimental planning

What You’ll Need:

Ph.D. in immunology or Cell biology related field required, or equivalent combination of education and experience
Proficient with basic laboratory techniques and principles of cellular and molecular biology
Strong understanding of immunology is needed
Some knowledge in nanotechnology would be a plus
Must feel comfortable working with mice
Enthusiastic, team player, and self-motivated individual; excellent written and oral communication skills; knowledge of basic computer skills
Strong organizational skills, including the ability to handle a variety of tasks in a fast-paced environment required; Must have attention to detail and be thorough in completing work tasks.
