Job DescriptionThis postdoctoral position is a temporary position for up to one year, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to five additional years. The PhD must have been conferred within five years prior to employment. Sandia reserves the right to extend the posting date at any time. : The Applied Systems Analysis and Research Department (8844) is seeking a dedicated groundwater transport modeling postdoctoral researcher to join our multidisciplinary team of scientists and engineers who are passionate about their work. You will be developing innovative solutions for numerical simulation of the processes affecting radionuclide mobilization and transport in the subsurface. You will use state-of-the-art software tools and high-performance computing to build a sound technical basis for and improve confidence in multiple deep geologic disposal options for nuclear waste. On any given day, you may be called on to: + Advance understanding and prediction of radionuclide mobilization and transport in the geologic systems, engineered barriers, and waste forms that comprise generic disposal reference cases. + Develop, verify, and validate subsurface flow and reactive transport models, including multi-fidelity modeling approaches. + Identify simulation needs and collaborate with software developers to advance capability. + Address uncertainty arising from modeling assumptions, uncertain inputs, and stochastic variation. + Develop Python scripts for pre- and post-processing, visualization, and analysis. + Conduct simulations and analyses in a high-performance computing environment. + Prepare presentations and publications. + Travel to conferences and project meetings.
+ PhD in Geochemistry, Geoscience, Geosciences Engineering, or other relevant degree + Proven ability to conduct research and development + Numerical simulation/modeling experience
+ Experience with numerical simulation of aqueous geochemistry using simulators such as EQ3/6, PHREEQC, Geochemists’ Workbench, etc. + Experience with numerical simulation of flow and reactive transport in porous media using simulators such as PFLOTRAN, CRUNCH-FLOW, FEHM, TOUGH-REACT, etc. + Experience conducting simulation and analysis in a Linux or Unix environment + Experience programming and/or scripting for scientific analysis using languages such as Python, C, C++, Fortran 2003, etc. + Demonstrated ability to integrate information, datasets, and methods from multiple fields such as geohydrology, geochemistry, geomechanics, statistics and numerical methods + Proven ability to succeed through teaming with others + Excellent communication skills and a demonstrated ability to develop technical ideas and results and present them in oral and written form + Ability to work in an environment with changing priorities + Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE L-level security clearance
The Applied Systems Analysis and Research Department develops a wide range of software and engineering solutions to ensure the safe deep geologic disposal of commercial spent nuclear fuel and US DOE legacy nuclear wastes. We develop high performance computing, quality-assured software for probabilistic performance assessment of deep geologic disposal systems, including tools for simulation of the coupled processes affecting radionuclide release and transport in the subsurface, sampling-based uncertainty and sensitivity analysis, and automated run-control. We conduct experiments at an underground research laboratory in bedded salt to characterize features and investigate processes affecting repository performance; and partner with adjacent departments and colleagues throughout the national lab complex to integrate mechanistic models of the physical and chemical processes affecting engineered and natural barrier systems into total system performance assessments of generic repositories in a variety of host rock environments.

This position does not currently require a Department of Energy (DOE) security clearance. Sandia will conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Furthermore, employees in New Mexico need to pass a U.S. Air Force background screen for access to Kirtland Air Force Base. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause access to be denied or terminated, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment. If hired without a clearance and it subsequently becomes necessary to obtain and maintain one for the position, or you bid on positions that require a clearance, a pre-processing background review may be conducted prior to a required federal background investigation. Applicants for a DOE security clearance need to be U.S. citizens. Members of the workforce (MOWs) hired at Sandia who require uncleared access for greater than 179 days during their employment, are required to go through the Uncleared Personal Identity Verification (UPIV) process. Access includes physical and/or cyber (logical) access, as well as remote access to any NNSA information technology (IT) systems. UPIV requirements are not applicable to individuals who require a DOE personnel security clearance for the performance of their SNL employment or to foreign nationals. The UPIV process will include the completion of a USAccess Enrollment, SF-85 (Questionnaire for Non-Sensitive Positions) and OF-306 (Declaration of for Federal Employment). An unfavorable UPIV determination will result in immediate retrieval of the SNL issued badge, removal of cyber (logical) access and/or removal from SNL subcontract. All MOWs may appeal the unfavorable UPIV determination to DOE/NNSA immediately. If the appeal is unsuccessful, the MOW may try to go through the UPIV process one year after the decision date.
