Job Description

The Nuclear Science and Engineering Division is seeking a highly motivated engineer to join the Research and Test Reactor Department (www.anl.gov/nse/research-and-test-reactors).  The successful applicant will perform thermal hydraulic analyses (design and safety) related to conversion of existing research reactors to the use of new fuel, including possible modification of the fuel assembly, reactor system, and/or operation (fuel cycle and other characteristics). It is expected that the engineer will have to develop applicable physical, mathematical models and computational strategies; compare predictions of reactor performance characteristics with experimental results and/or alternative simulations; prepare reports on the results of analytical activities for presentation to sponsors and the technical community; and coordinate related work activities at the Laboratory and elsewhere, as appropriate.

  • Skill in the application of computational fluid dynamics software (e.g. STAR-CCM+, COMSOL) to solve complex engineering problems.
  • Knowledge of fluid flow and heat transfer for nuclear system applications and reactor safety analyses.
  • Knowledge of nuclear engineering principles, theories, and practices for the design and analysis of reactor systems.
  • Skill in the conception, design, and evaluation of innovative approaches and solutions to quantitative problems.
  • Skill in the application of programming languages (e.g. Python, Matlab, Fortran, etc.) for scripting and data analysis.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal, oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to model and carry out Argonne’s Core Values: Impact, Safety, Respect, Integrity, and Teamwork.

This level of knowledge is typically achieved through a formal education in nuclear engineering, mechanical engineering, or associated field at the Ph.D. degree level & 0+ years’ professional experience.
