The Department of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) is one of seven academic departments in Carnegie Institute of Technology, the engineering college at Carnegie Mellon. MSE has a long and distinguished tradition in materials education and research, and today our faculty continue to address the more important and challenging issues at the forefront of science and technology. Materials Science and Engineering is an interdisciplinary activity that applies the principles of basic sciences and engineering to understanding the behavior of materials, their development and applications. Both our undergraduate and graduate students are exposed to this interdisciplinary approach.
We are seeking a Research Associate to join Michael McHenry’s labs in the MSE Department in the College of Engineering. In this role, you will assist in the development and execution of applied research projects including experiment and equipment design, measurements, materials processing, properties and performance measurements, analysis of data collected and writing up of experiment results.
Core responsibilities include:
Researching and developing projects with emphasis on mechanical processing
Performing data analysis and other experimental procedures
Assisting masters and doctoral students in tasks related to core mechanical processing
Reporting and presenting results
Identifying problems and obstacles to progress; developing strategies to tackle problems
Collaborating with equipment vendors
Writing technical reports
Running amorphous metal and nanocomposite materials mechanical processing
Facilitating core winding, post processing and testing
Assisting in motor component processing, motor construction and testing
Performing research experiments following experimental protocol and procedures
Documenting information by compiling and maintaining accurate and detailed records
Performing related duties as assigned.
Master's degree or B. S. Degree in Engineering or Physics with equivalent experience
2-8 years of Industrial Experience with Mechanical Processing of Amorphous Metals
2-8 years of Research and Research Lab Experience required
Proven ability in Motor Component Processing and Manufacturing
