Job Description

The Accelerator Systems Division of the Advanced Photon Source (APS) at Argonne National Laboratory is seeking a post-doctoral appointee to design, analyze and commission various advanced beam diagnostic systems for the APS accelerator complex.

The post-doc will join a team of APS physicists and engineers with the goal of using diagnostics in machine studies to study and improve accelerator performance and beam measurements. The successful candidate will work to develop new and to improve existing diagnostic capabilities aimed at measuring properties of both electron and photon beams. Activities will include development, testing and analysis of diagnostics on the bench in the lab and in the machine during machine studies.

We expect you to have:

  • A PhD in accelerator physics or a related field.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of accelerator instrumentation used to measure accelerator performance and beam properties.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of beam physics and control room analysis techniques used to understand functioning, problems and possible improvements of various diagnostic systems.
  • Knowledge of modern electronics including DSPs and FPGAs and their use in state-of-the-art accelerator instrumentation.
  • Skill in developing and using THz detectors, gated cameras, spectrometers and radiofrequency measurements to assemble a complete description of beam properties including time-resolved studies of beam properties.
  • Ability to use scientific analysis software such as Matlab.
  • Strong understanding of various beam instabilities encountered in high single bunch current storage rings. Familiarity with various accelerator simulation tools such as elegant, SDDS.
  • Knowledge of radiofrequency systems and measurement techniques as used in particle accelerators.
  • Publish, present, and promote new ideas, insights and results.
  • Interact and actively collaborate with both mentors and students.
