Job Description

We invite you to apply for a Postdoctoral Appointee position with our Chemical Sciences and Engineering Division (CSE).

Under the guidance of a supervisor, you will conduct research in solvation and speciation in multivalent electrolytes. The project is an interdisciplinary position with the focus on electrolytes – syntheses, characterization, and the understanding of the basic phenomena in its bulk solution and on the interface with potential purturbation. The work includes synthesis and characterization of electrolytes (organic and organometallic compounds), interacting with other groups, and evaluating bulk, electrochemical, and interfacial properties using techniques such as cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, NMR spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and FTIR to understand the solvation and speciation. You will also design, synthesize, and characterize multivalent electrolyte systems – new salts and solvents. Conduct electrochemical/chemical/physical characterization (NMR, Raman, FTIR) of these systems towards energy storage applications. Design and carry out new experimental procedures for the understanding of the electrolyte systems. Analyze data and prepares manuscripts for submission to peer-reviewed publications. Attend and make presentations at scientific meetings; and prepare reports, presentations, and papers for group meetings.

We expect you to have:

  • Knowledge of and experimental expertise in organometallic chemistry and electrochemistry. 
  • Extensive knowledge of electrolytes in energy storage materials. 
  • Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills. 
  • Ability to keep abreast of pertinent scientific literature. 
  • Experience with Schlenk techniques and glove boxes. 
  • Experience with standard electroanalytical techniques (CV, galvanostatic charging/discharging with MACCOR), and a range of characterization instruments (NMR, SEM, TEM, FTIR and Raman) would be an asset. 
  • Diffusion NMR spectroscopy is desired for investigation of solvation structures.

This level of knowledge is typically achieved through a formal education in organometallic chemistry or materials sciences at the Ph.D. degree level with 0 to 3 years of experience or equivalent in the scientific application of this knowledge and practical laboratory experience.
