Job Summary

In the laboratory of Adeline Vanderver, MD, the Research Scientist will help develop leukodystrophy associated biomarkers and help establish novel genetic approaches for diagnosis as part of the Leukodystrophy Center of Excellence (LCE) research program. The LCE research program aims to establish pre-clinical and clinical research to improve the diagnosis and treatment of leukodystrophies. Leukodystrophies are inherited disorders of the white matter of the brain. The Myelin Disorders Bioregistry Project collects clinical data and samples to discover new genetic disorders, and develop biomarkers in the leukodystrophies, as well as establish natural history for the leukodystrophies. The Research Associate will supervise, manage and phenotype leukodystrophy cellular and murine models, including IPSc through cell culture, developmental murine experiments, behavioral phenotyping, immunohistochemistry, and genetic modification of models. Goals include molecular therapy development to be tested in pre-clinical models. The Research Scientist I will independently plan and execute experiments to further current understanding of rare disease mechanisms. S/he will utilize advanced laboratory techniques and equipment to collect, process, and analyze data. Expertise and experimental background working with animal models is required.  Additional responsibilities include presenting findings to internal and external collaborators, training junior lab staff and student volunteers and overseeing junior lab staff. S/he will help develop grant applications. Finally, s/he will assist in the development of scientific manuscripts for the dissemination of knowledge in these disorders.

This position has the potential to allow the investigator to develop independent research data in collaboration with a leading medical team in the leukodystrophies. S/he will utilize advanced laboratory techniques and equipment to collect, process, and analyze data. Experimental background working with animal models, cell culture, next generation sequencing platforms, immunoblot, imunohistory chemistry and basic proteomic and genomic platforms is preferred. Additional responsibilities include presenting findings to internal and external collaborators and training junior lab staff and student volunteers. S/he will help develop grant applications. Finally, s/he will assist in the development of scientific manuscripts for the dissemination of knowledge in these disorders.

Job Responsibilities:
• Conducts research of significant scientific value in the basic and/or translational science area(s) relevant to their practice specialty
• Participates in the design, planning and conduct of one or more experiments
• Trains technical staff, students, fellows & physicians in lab procedures
• Monitors daily resource allocations and day-to-day lab personnel activities
• Composes/Assists in developing publications for peer reviewed, scientific, quality and management, Journals
• Assists with the submission of applications for grants/contracts for funding of research projects
• Collaborates with researchers, external agencies and institutions to develop cooperative research initiatives
• Responsible for appropriate use of research funds
• May supervise technical staff and students
• May participate in educational programs and teaching assignments

Required Education and Experience:
• A terminal degree PhD, MD, DVM, etc.
• 5-7 years scientifically relevant post-fellowship experience
