Job Description

The Department of Environmental Health Sciences, School of Public Health at The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) invites applications for 2 tenure eligible positions, at the Assistant Professor/ Associate Professor/Professor level. Rank, salary, start up package and tenure status will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.

The School of Public Health at UAB is accredited by the Council of Education for Public Health (CEPH). The Department offers MPH, MSPH and Ph.D. degrees with specialization in environmental toxicology, occupational health and safety and industrial hygiene and houses the NIOSH-funded Deep South Center for Occupational Health and Safety (http://www.soph.uab.edu/dsc/). The Department is actively involved with diverse University-wide Interdisciplinary Research Centers such as the UAB Center for Nanoscale Materials and Biointegration, the Materials Processing and Applications Development Center, the Center for Free Radical Biology and the Enabling Technology Laboratory in addition to ongoing collaborations with researchers in the Schools of Nursing and Engineering and the College of Arts and Sciences (Departments of Biology, Chemistry and Physics). UAB is a highly-innovative major research university with five schools ranking in the top 20 in NIH funding and an overall level of research funding totaling close to $500 million and a local economic impact estimated at nearly $5 billion.

The tenure track positions require highly motivated applicants with demonstrated ability to compete for research grants and contracts and effective collaboration in multidisciplinary projects as well as teaching excellence in graduate and undergraduate courses. The applicants will have demonstrated research experience in one of the following areas: industrial hygiene; exposure assessment, and environmental or occupational sustainability. The ability to develop interdisciplinary collaborative interactions both within UAB and outside involving partnership with the local and regional business sector including the aerospace, automotive, bioscience, pharmaceutical, chemical, forest products, metal manufacturing, distribution, and food products industry will be highly regarded. The capacity to be actively involved in the NIOSH-funded Education and Research Center activities will be highly valued. Advising master and doctoral students and engagement in appropriate service activities are also expected. Minimum qualifications are a Ph.D. or equivalent in environmental health sciences, chemistry, toxicology, physics, industrial hygiene, engineering, or other scientifically appropriate disciplines.
