Job Description

: We are seeking a Postdoctoral Appointee who will be responsible for conducting basic and applied research in physical and process metallurgy with a special emphasis on additive manufacturing (AM). Sandia is currently pursuing research into both selective laser melting and direct energy deposition methods of metal AM, including feedstock analysis, processing and diagnostic optimization, metallurgical characterization, and part and process qualification strategies. On any given day, you may be called on to: + Plan and direct fundamental and applied research, supporting engineering applications + Write technical papers, reports and specifications + Present technical results at program meetings and professional conferences + Conduct short-term problem solving and failure analyses, including travel, in support of customer needs Program funding allows for some flexibility in research projects to align with candidate expertise and interests.

Required:
+ PhD in Materials Science and Engineering, Metallurgy, Welding Engineering, or a related field; conferred within 5 years prior to employment + Experience in physical metallurgy concepts as it relates to metal processing, microstructure, and property relationships + Strong communication skills as evidenced by a track record of both written professional publications and oral presentations + Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q security clearance

Department Description:

The Materials Characterization & Performance Department supports Sandia by developing and applying a breadth of analytical techniques to assess the structure, composition, and properties of materials. We serve our customers by helping them understand material behavior and performance, develop improved materials for specific components and applications, as well as develop lifetime performance predictions for materials. By applying a breadth of techniques, including spectroscopic and diffraction techniques, light and electron microscopy, metallography, surface analysis, chemical analysis, and contaminant analysis, we provide materials understanding and solutions for: engineering components and structures, failure analysis of all types of materials, and research projects across a wide customer base. We serve the entire corporation in their material analysis needs and frequently other federal agencies and industry. We also act as a gateway to materials characterization capabilities within and outside of Sandia. Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) granted Q-level security clearance. Sandia is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre-employment background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record and credit checks, and employment and education verifications. Applicants for employment must be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship.
