Postdoctoral Appointee

Employer:  Sandia National Laboratories
Job Number:  4019757 (Ref.#. 656596)
Date Posted:  02/24/2017
Application Deadline: Open Until Filled

Job Description

: The Post-Doctoral Appointee Program is designed to recruit outstanding Ph.D. applicants to assist a line organization in meeting its mission objectives and to provide a professional technical work environment for the employee. The Ph.D. must have been conferred within one to five years prior to employment. These assignments are for a one-year period, with the option at managementís discretion to serve no more than five additional one-year assignments. We are seeking a Postdoctoral Scientist to join a dynamic, interdisciplinary team of scientists at four DOE National Laboratories that constitute the Hydrogen Materials Advanced Research Consortium (HyMARC). HyMARC is using a combination of cutting-edge modeling, synthesis, and advanced characterization tools to provide the foundational understanding needed to design effective hydrogen storage materials. The primary focus of this job will be to conduct experiments using advanced neutron spectroscopic tools at the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) located at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). As such, the postdoc is expected to be in residence for the majority of the year at ORNL. However, the postdoc will also work closely with the HyMARC research team at Sandiaís California site and will be in residence there for approximately one month each in January and June (coinciding with SNS accelerator down times). The successful candidate will be an integral member of the HyMARC team and will be expected to play a major role in synthesizing new hydrogen storage media, as well as advancing the structural and in-situ characterization of these materials using state-of-the-art X-ray, ion-scattering techniques, and spectroscopic tools, as well as the SNS neutron capabilities. For additional information, please visithttps://hymarc.org/

A recent doctorate in chemistry, materials science or related field is required, with a strong emphasis on synthesis and characterization of bulk and/or nanoscale inorganic materials. Expertise in neutron techniques is not required. The candidate must have direct, hands-on experience with handling air-sensitive compounds, be versed in Schlenk line and glove-box techniques, and standard analytical techniques (spectroscopy, diffraction, etc.). Strong written and oral communication skills are required. Emphasis on a demonstrated record of high technical achievement (e.g. as evidenced by publication record) and the ability to conduct creative, independent research is preferred.

Advanced characterization techniques, such as neutron methods, soft X-ray techniques, small-angle X-ray scattering, XPS, TEM, solid-state NMR, PCT/Sieverts, mass-spectroscopy; Solid-state and wet-chemistry nanoscale materials synthesis.

Department Description:

The Energy Nanomaterials Department is a research organization specializing in the synthesis and characterization of nanomaterials for energy and national security applications. Projects and capabilities in the department's research portfolio include nanoporous materials for sensing, catalysis, energy harvesting, and gas storage; materials for energy and hydrogen storage; thermoelectrics; and nanoscale materials characterization including extensive electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, and nanoindentation instrumentation. This organization supports a broad set of large analytical equipment critical to the operations of the California site. The department is a key element in a diverse set of materials science organizations and resources, managed both locally and across the corporation. We partner broadly with other personnel within Sandia and many external institutions, taking advantage of our proximity to other researchers and facilities in the San Francisco Bay Area and Northern California.
