Job Description

: The Post-Doctoral Appointee Program is designed to recruit outstanding Ph.D. applicants to assist a line organization in meeting its mission objectives and to provide a professional technical work environment for the employee. The Ph.D. must have been conferred within one to five years prior to employment. These assignments are for a one-year period, with the option at managementís discretion to serve no more than five additional one-year assignments. We are seeking a Postdoctoral Scientist to develop materials and diagnostics for drug delivery systems, including nanoparticle systems and soft materials coatings. The ideal candidate will have a doctorate in chemistry, biochemistry, bioengineering, chemical engineering, or related discipline (e.g., molecular biology) with a focus on interfacial chemistry and quantitative methods in biological analysis from experimental design to validation.

Requires a recent doctorate in chemistry, biochemistry, bioengineering, chemical engineering, or related discipline (e.g., molecular biology, analytical chemistry). Strong preference will be for candidates who are highly skilled in the areas of nanoparticle synthesis, surface chemistry, assay development, and molecular diagnostics (nucleic acid-based). The ideal candidate will have expertise in nanomaterial preparation and characterization, surface coatings, and micro-to-nanoscale materials with demonstrated success in the development of bio-assays. The candidate must be a strong individual contributor within a multidisciplinary team comprising engineers, biologists, chemists, and programmers, within the framework of a milestone-driven research project. Strong written and oral communication skills are required. A demonstrated record of high technical achievement (e.g. as evidenced by publication in high-impact scientific journals) and the demonstrated ability to conduct creative, independent research is required.

Knowledge and experience in one or more of the following: inorganic and organic chemistry, lipid bilayers, immunochemistry, protein detection methods (e.g., ELISA), cell culture, bioconjugate chemistry, electrophoretic methods, microscopy, and analytical techniques (e.g., chromatography, mass spectrometry, spectroscopy).

Department Description:

Currently, we have ongoing projects in the areas of medical diagnostics, therapeutics screening, and targeted drug delivery, as well as basic research studies in engineered biomolecular materials and interfaces, cellular signaling, protein structure/function determination, proteomics, computational biology, and microfluidics. Org 08635 works at the intersection of biology and nano materials, with projects involving ion channels, toxins that disrupt them, quantum-mechanical modeling of proteins, and immobilizations of proteins in nano materials.

Security Clearance:

No clearance required. This position does not currently require a Department of Energy (DOE)-granted security clearance. Sandia will conduct a pre-employment background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record checks, and employment and education verifications. Further, employees in New Mexico must pass a U.S. Air Force background screen for access to the work site. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause access to be denied or terminated, rendering the inability to perform the duties assigned and resulting in termination of employment. If hired without a clearance, and one subsequently becomes required or you bid on positions that require a DOE-granted security clearance, a pre-processing background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record and credit checks, and employment and education verifications may be conducted prior to a required federal background investigation. Applicants for DOE-granted security clearances must be U.S. citizens and be able to obtain and maintain the appropriate DOE security clearance as required for the position.
