Job Description

The Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering seeks a full-time associate or more senior professional specialist and group manager to focus on the development and application of surface science methods to sustainable energy research, in particular related to (i) atomic and molecular mechanisms of surface reactions; (ii) new experimental methods and new approaches to ultrahigh vacuum and in-situ probes of reactions, growth and patterning at surfaces of materials; and (iii) light-induced chemistry with applications to solar energy conversion to fuels.

The successful candidate will be expected to have experience in one or more of the above technical areas and assist with overseeing and managing the research of a large, diverse, and very active research group. Primary responsibilities will include but are not limited to supervising and mentoring members of the research group; attending meetings related to the group; preparing grant proposals and reports; monitoring group ultrahigh vacuum instrumentation, experimental facilities and data repositories, as well as equipment maintenance; conducting research; and interacting with administrators.

Candidates should be actively engaged in surface science research, must hold a Ph.D. in Chemistry or a related field, and have a minimum of three years of additional research experience. Candidates must have knowledge of research pertaining to sustainable energy as well as extensive experience in experimental surface science research, have the ability to work both independently and within a team environment, and have excellent organizational and communication skills. In addition, candidates must be self-motivated, with excellent problem solving skills, attention to detail, and the ability to supervise others.
