Department Description:

The Energy Storage Technology and Systems department (6111) manages the the DOE Office of Electricity Energy Storage Systems research program. The primary R&D focus of the department is on the development of advanced energy storage technologies and systems including development of low cost battery technologies, safety and reliability of energy storage systems, power electronics and power conversion systems, computational and analytical tools for efficient utilization of energy storage in the electricity infrastructure. In addition, the department manages several activities for the DOE related to the deployment and demonstration of new energy storage projects, including the development of methods and tools to evaluate the performance of storage systems, and methods for the optimal utilization of energy storage assets. We have active collaborations with many stakeholders in the electricity industry including electric utilities, product developers, universities and other national laboratories to enable the development and rapid integration of energy storage technologies in the electricity infrastructure.

Job Summary:

We are significantly expanding our effort in power electronics and power conversion systems (PCS). We are looking for an outstanding individual with a recent Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering or a closely related field with experience in experimental and computational aspects of power electronics and power conversion systems. Primary R&D focus is on the development of advanced power conversions systems and control methodologies for the optimal operation of energy storage devices in grid-tied and off-grid environments. Research will also include silicon-based and wide band gap (WBG)-based PCS architectures, advanced topologies and laboratory capability development Experience with the integration of energy storage systems, especially advanced batteries, is highly desired. The Post-Doctoral Appointee Program is designed to recruit outstanding Ph.D. applicants to assist a line organization in meeting its mission objectives and to provide a professional technical work environment for the employee. The Ph.D. must have been conferred within one to five years prior to employment. These assignments are for a one-year period, with the option at managementís discretion to serve no more than five additional one-year assignments. Extensions of up to six years require employee's manager approval. Six years or greater requires employee's manager and HR VP approval.

+ PhD in Electrical Engineering or a closely related area + Software development skills that include experience in Matlab, Simulink, SimPowerSystems, and PLECS. + Understanding of WBG devices such as SiC and GaN semiconductor switches + Experience in developing steady-state and dynamic simulations of power electronics and control + Understanding grid interconnection issues of distributed energy systems + Publication record demonstrated through journal and conference publications and/or industry experience

+ Knowledge in other simulation platforms such as PSPICE and PSCAD + Experience with high-frequency-link converters including DC-DC, DC-AC, and AC-DC converters + Understanding of basic open and close-loop control methods such as pulse width modulation and advanced controls + Strong interest in the applications of power electronics plus energy storage for electric utility applications such as active and reactive power support + Some understanding of energy storage technologies such as batteries, flywheels, electrochemical capacitors and SMES + Strong interest in building up a simulation laboratory to increase laboratory capability + Experience in developing technical proposal preparations for new research topics + Self-motivated and able to work independently with minimal supervision and ability to work in a teaming environment + Good overall communication skills

Security Clearance:

No clearance required. This position does not currently require a Department of Energy (DOE)-granted security clearance. Sandia will conduct a pre-employment background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record checks, and employment and education verifications. Further, employees in New Mexico must pass a U.S. Air Force background screen for access to the work site. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause access to be denied or terminated, rendering the inability to perform the duties assigned and resulting in termination of employment. If hired without a clearance, and one subsequently becomes required or you bid on positions that require a DOE-granted security clearance, a pre-processing background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record and credit checks, and employment and education verifications may be conducted prior to a required federal background investigation. Applicants for DOE-granted security clearances must be U.S. citizens and be able to obtain and maintain the appropriate DOE security clearance as required for the position.
