Job Description

The University of Nebraska is seeking to fill a beef nutritionist – range production systems position. This is a 12-month, tenure leading, open rank, 50% research, 50% extension position in the Department of Animal Science and is located at the West Central Research and Extension Center in North Platte, Nebraska. The faculty member in this position will be expected to lead a nationally-recognized research and extension program in beef production systems based on range, pasture, crop residues and other available feeds while maintaining and/or improving the environment. The research and extension focus will be to provide leadership for nutrition aspects of beef cow-calf production systems with the ability to capture data from conception to harvest.

This position will be responsible for building a nationally and internationally recognized program focused on engaging learners with research-based findings. Key elements include identification of emerging issues, developing programs which address the needs of stakeholders using innovative and scholarly methods, obtaining external funding combined with the training of graduate students at the Gudmundsen Sandhills Laboratory and strengthening the University’s rapport with stakeholders, commodity groups, and state/federal partners.

A Ph.D. in Animal Science or closely related field, with the degree completed before employment begins, and a background in beef cattle nutrition are required. For the Associate or Full Professor level, an externally supported, nationally recognized extension and research program in the area of beef cattle nutrition is required. Candidates with an understanding of beef range production systems, strong oral and written communication skills, ability to secure extramural funding, ability and/or potential to develop extension programs and desire to work in a team environment to further strengthen collaborative links with multiple scientists at UNL are preferred.
