Job Description

Job Summary: The Department of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science in the College of Engineering at Michigan State University invites applications for a fixed-term research faculty position in the area of Smart Packaging particularly focusing on entrepreneurial activities, and bringing technology to market. Candidates must have an earned PhD in chemical engineering, materials science and engineering, or another closely related engineering discipline. The position will be filled at the Assistant, Associate or Full Professor level depending on the qualifications and record of the successful candidate. This is a multi-year renewable research appointment through the Midland Research Institute for Value Chain Creation (MRIVCC) to be located in Midland, MI. (http://midlandvaluechain.broad.msu.edu/).The successful candidate will be expected to work in collaboration with other scientists at Michigan State University, the MRIVCC, and external private sector and public sector partners, to develop an externally funded program in the area of Smart Packaging. Research projects that focus on "proof-of-concept" innovative technology with a clear path forward towards commercialization will merit special consideration. Smart Packaging encompasses both active packaging, which provides additional functionality to package systems, and intelligent packaging, which provides additional communication attributes. Smart packaging, therefore, can enhance the value chain through extending the shelf life of products; protecting package contents from degradation, contamination or counterfeiting; identifying products that may have low quality or potentially be unsafe; promoting efficient identification and movement of products through the supply chain, etc. Smart packaging materials may include, for instance, pH-sensitive polymers and halochromic materials, moisture-sensitive materials, temperature-responsive polymers, and oxygen-absorbing and antimicrobial materials. Smart packaging systems may include devices such as RFID tags or printed electronics, sensors, chemical emitters or absorbers, sensors and indicators, or other elements that are embedded within packaging materials or otherwise incorporated into packaging systems. The successful candidate will be expected to establish a sustainable research program based on external funding that complements the MRIVCC mission and vision. Candidates will be evaluated based on their ability for entrepreneurial thinking and for obtaining self-sustainable funding. Candidates should have a record of obtaining external industry and Federal/State grant funding, particularly SBIR or equivalent grants. This position requires that a significant portion of salary support be secured from external sources. Michigan State University is pro-active in exploring opportunities for employment for dual career couples, both inside and outside the University. Information about MSU's dual career support can be found at http://miwin.msu.edu/. Information about WorkLife at MSU and the College of Engineering can be found at http://www.egr.msu.edu/WE.
