Posting Summary: The School of Engineering and Applied Science (SEAS) is seeking an experienced, mid-career professional fluent in IT support.

The successful candidate will have demonstrated experience working with emerging, cutting-edge technologies. Required experience includes integrating, installing, configuring, and supporting customized systems. Proficiency in Linux, Windows and Mac environments, Microsoft deployment tools, Office technologies, wired and WiFi networking, and mobile devices.

U.S. Citizenship or U.S. Person status (pursuant to the EAR Part 772 and ITAR 120.15) is required.

The duties of this position include overseeing, administering, and troubleshooting computing systems; and enhancing operations in research laboratories, academic and administrative offices; and classrooms, conference rooms, and public spaces within the Engineering School.

Additional duties include training students, faculty, and staff on use of the installed technologies, including collaboration tools, and the training of less-experienced support personnel.

The position entails supporting users, systems and facilities located at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. There is little to no travel required. Hours of operation include some early morning, evening, and weekends to support scheduled, special events such as open houses, graduation, keynote lectures and conferences. At times, non-day shift hours are required to troubleshoot and resolve unforeseen outages or execute scheduled maintenance.

Required Minimum Level of Experience: Extensive - 7 years plus

Required Specific Experience: A minimum of 7 years of experience is required.

The successful candidate must have experience in the following:

Integrating, installing, configuring, programming, and supporting customized systems.

Specific experience requirements include Windows and Mac environments, Microsoft deployment tools, Office technologies, wired and WiFi networking, mobile devices (such as smartphones and tablets), and A/V.

Providing technical expertise (computers, servers, firewalls, networking, configuration, management tools, and audio-visual) in a large heterogeneous enterprise or service provider network.

Fluency in Linux, Windows and Mac Operating Systems.

At least four years serving in a systems administrator role supporting Linux, PC, Mac.

Fluency in supporting turnkey laboratory vendor solutions (for data acquisition, storage, and control).

Analyzing and troubleshooting IT issues.

Functioning successfully as a technical project lead as well as a team member in support of a project leader and other support professionals.

Preferred Minimum Level of Experience: Considerable - 4 to 7 years

Preferred Specific Experience: Preferred candidates will have experience in the following:

Working in a highly complex organization and/or educational institution.

Supporting high-profile, special events.

Supporting end users and supporting infrastructure used in classrooms and videoconferencing suites, including collaboration tools, webcast/broadcast and capture/recording technologies.

Implementing emerging technologies.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: In-depth understanding of network architecture, network hardware, monitoring and management software, network protocols, routing, firewalls, and network security methodologies.

Experience with basic network services including DHCP, DNS, NAT, as well as IPv4.

Shell scripting skills.

Experience with enterprise backup strategies.

Project management skills, including IT budgeting and life-cycle analysis.

Excellent customer service skills and the ability to deliver outstanding customer service.

Ability to work effectively with students, faculty, staff, other support professionals, compliance officials (IT auditors, security, risk and asset management), and vendors.

Demonstrated ability to provide leadership to less experienced engineers.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Experience with any system management or monitoring tools is a plus (Ganglia, Nagios, OpenNMS, Cacti).
